When I was young, this butterfly was almost universally known as the Hedge Brown, a name that has gone out of fashion but was more appropriate to its main habit of frequenting the hedgerows. The light coloured stripe on the underwing makes this an easy butterfly to identify when the wings are closed up, as in the photo.
