NB Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 and held the title until he died in 1900. He became Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893. As he had no heir the title became vacant . It was recreated in 1947, and conferred on Prince Philip when he married the future Queen Elizabeth II.
